Fake news is a problem that has been in the spotlight since the 2016 US presidential elections. Since
then, the negative effects of fake news and the role of social media have also been increasingly
recognized in Europe. A lively social and political debate has begun about the causes and effects of
fake news – about the trolling factories that appeal to the imagination – and about the ways in which
it can be effectively combated. That the solution has not yet been found may be clear.
To provide insight into the different ways countries are affected by fake news and how they actively combat
this, the European Liberal Forum (ELF) is organizing a Ralph Darendorf Roundtable on the subject. Experts
from Georgia, Turkey and Bosnia-Herzegovina shed light on the situation in their country.
