Several international organizations consider corruption as one of the major obstacles to economic and social development, and the fight against corruption is a fundamental aspect of a wider effort by citizens to oppose the deterioration of the quality of democratic processes.
The conference presenting the publication “Corruptissima Re Publica, Plurimae Leges” aims at explaining the differentiated diffusion and persistence of corruption across countries in Europe and design some proposals of effective anti-corruption measures.
- First, explain the economic, politico-institutional, social and cultural factors underlying the diffusion and persistence of corruption.
- Second, discuss how to fight corruption reducing the size of the public sector through cutting the public budget and simplifying and reducing regulation and through a continuous civic and political engagement of the public opinion.
- Third, make proposals of effective measures to the EU institutions, i.e., to improve the efficiency of the structural funds.
Speakers include:
- Marco Mariani, European Liberal Forum Board Member
- Giuseppe Abbatino, ANAC (National Anti-Corruption Authority) officer, EC expert
