Almost three years of “America First” has put a serious strain on the transatlantic relationship. Matched by strong rhetoric from the EU side, the has led to cooling relations on both sides of the pond. And with strong disagreement on topics such as trade, climate, and foreign policy, it is difficult to imagine the deadlock coming to an end. Yet, regardless of the political debate, many common challenges for Europe and the US remain. In economic, military and civic areas, we are deeply intertwined, and on both sides of the Atlantic, there is still an interest to move towards a common destiny. Given the new and existing challenges, and living in an age of new empires, how can we reforge the transatlantic alliance? What are the building blocks of a stronger transatlantic partnership? And how do we translate our shared history and shared values into a shared future?
