Ralf Dahrendorf Roundtable – Midsize Cities and Migration: Challenge or Chance?

Migrants tend to move to cities. They migrate to big cities like Paris or London, but also to midsize cities like Mechelen in Belgium, Landskrona in Sweden or Zoetermeer in the Netherlands. Migration has been changing these cities’ landscapes. It has contributed to their economies and has brought challenges. Increasingly diverse city populations require different public policies. Some midsize cities have been able to adapt and steer towards urban growth. Yet, many struggle. Midsize cities have less resources than bigger cities and tend to be more vulnerable to economic recessions. What can midsize cities do to manage migration in a way that benefits all residents, new and old? What kind of policies are necessary for housing, inclusion and employment?
