Understanding and Managing Migration and the Impact on Societies

Malta is a populated country that experiences fast economic development. According to the European Commission the Maltese economy grew by 6.7% in 2017, with an unemployment rate of 4.6%. It economic dynamism has attracted a considerable number of foreigners looking for work opportunities. As a small island with limited resources and space, this has direct consequences on the economy and local people’s lives. As the arrival of newcomers keep pace with the economic growth, questions are raised about how to manage this demographic pressure and it impacts on society. What are the political dynamics of this issue? What lessons can be learned from other European countries? Can we formulate a liberal answer to this issue? And how can we ensure sustainable economic development that benefits all?
