The European Union has long been a champion of global trade and innovation. With the global economy and big and emerging players in the international order realigning we discussed what Europe must do to remain competitive globally and continue to be the champion for sustainable innovation, trade and growth. This debate considered the extraordinary pace of innovation in Europe in everything from life sciences to blockchain and Artificial Intelligence – how can we engender the conducive regulatory environment in which such developments can be harnessed for the good of the EU, its citizens and the global community? How can we create the necessary confidence of businesses into the European market to support this growth? How should the EU face up to the political challenges of the new global trading environment? How can all of this be achieved in a unique European way with sustainability and value to consumers at its heart?
