Progressive liberalism is characterized by its international outlook, its respect for individual opinions, and its strive for a lively civil society. This philosophical torch is carried in the Netherlands by the political party D66.
In order to further stimulate debate and facilitate discussion, D66 developed these ‘Basic Values’ of progressive liberalism. Since 2006 they have served as guidelines to a debate. They are by no means the answer to any debate, they mean to initiate a debate. These Basic Values represent the first points of deliberation, the initial pondering, to start a thoughtful discussion about where a society should be headed.
